The Bundle of Sticks
O Feixe de Gravetos
A father wants to teach his sons an important lesson about working together. He uses a simple bundle of sticks to show them something they will never forget.
A father had many sons.
Um pai tinha muitos filhos.
The sons always fought with each other.
Os filhos sempre brigavam uns com os outros.
They argued every day.
Eles discutiam todos os dias.
The father was very sad.

One day, the father called all his sons.

He had a bundle of sticks tied together with rope.

"Try to break this bundle,"
"Tenta quebrar este feixe,"
the father said to his oldest son.
disse o pai ao seu filho mais velho.
The oldest son tried very hard.
O filho mais velho se esforçou muito.
He could not break the bundle.

The sticks were too strong together.
Os gravetos eram fortes demais quando unidos.
"You try,"
"Tenta tu,"
the father said to his second son.

The second son tried and tried.

He could not break the bundle either.

All the sons tried to break the bundle.

No one could do it. Then the father untied the rope.

The father looked at his sons.

he asked.

"When you stay together, you are strong like the bundle."

"When you fight and stay apart, you are weak like the single sticks."

The sons understood.
Os filhos compreenderam.
They stopped fighting.
Pararam de lutar.
They helped each other.
Eles se ajudaram mutuamente.
Together, they were strong.
Juntos, eram fortes.
